In a move that has sparked both national reflection and public debate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State after former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
The decision, made public during a special Federal Executive Council session, was welcomed by the Federal Ministry of Education, which described the gesture as a profound tribute to Buhari’s lasting contributions to national growth — especially in the area of human capital development.
According to a statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, the ministry considers it an honour to serve as the channel through which Buhari’s legacy will be etched in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
“President Buhari’s legacy spans critical sectors — from national security and anti-corruption to agriculture and education. Naming an institution of learning after him is a strong testament to his impact,” the ministry stated on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
📚 A Legacy of National Development
Buhari’s civilian presidency from 2015 to 2023 was marked by bold policy reforms and economic restructuring efforts including the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, Treasury Single Account (TSA), Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), and nationwide social investment schemes.
Minister Alausa noted that Tinubu’s renaming of UNIMAID reflects both a deep respect for Buhari’s legacy and a strategic commitment to education as a pillar of Nigeria’s sustainable development.
🎙️ “This symbolic act by President Tinubu reinforces the belief that education is not only the foundation for national identity but also the engine for long-term growth,” he added.
🏛️ Reactions Across the Nation
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from citizens and alumni, with some applauding the honour bestowed upon the late leader, while others voiced concerns about renaming a 50-year-old institution with historical significance.
However, for many, especially in Borno State, the renaming serves as a recognition of Buhari’s earlier role as military governor of the North-East region and his enduring legacy in governance.
🕊️ Final Tribute to a National Figure
President Buhari was laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, following a state funeral attended by dignitaries, military leaders, and citizens from all walks of life. His death marked the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most prominent post-independence figures, having served both as military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a two-term democratic president.
