Nigeria’s President Honors Fela Kuti Following Historic Grammy Recognition

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has paid tribute to legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti after the late musician received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The honour marks a historic moment, as Fela Kuti becomes the first African artist to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The recognition comes nearly three decades after his death and serves as a global acknowledgment of his lasting impact on music and social activism.
In a statement released on Sunday, President Tinubu described Fela as more than an entertainer, calling him a powerful voice for the oppressed and a revolutionary figure whose music challenged injustice and inspired generations worldwide. According to the president, the award affirms Fela’s enduring influence and highlights Africa’s foundational contribution to modern global music.
During the 1970s, Fela Kuti created Afrobeat, a genre that fused jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms. His work later laid the foundation for Afrobeats, a contemporary sound that has gained massive international popularity and continues to shape the global music scene.
Members of the Kuti family were present at the Los Angeles ceremony to receive the award, including Fela’s son, Femi Kuti. Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido was also seen celebrating with the family, reflecting the strong connection between Fela’s legacy and today’s Afrobeats movement.
Speaking from Lagos, Fela’s grandson Made Kuti, who was previously nominated for a Grammy, said the recognition confirms his grandfather’s place among the greatest musicians in history. He noted that very few artists can be credited with creating an entirely new genre that continues to thrive decades later.
