Nigerian Student Shines Globally After Winning Chinese Language Proficiency Prize

A Nigerian university student, Faith Mba Emmanuel, has gained international recognition after emerging as a Global Third Prize winner at the 25th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students in China.

Faith, who is also known by her Chinese name Lu Xingyao, is a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, and a learner at the university’s Confucius Institute.

Her achievement stands out because she competed against 157 participants from 138 countries, many of whom had studied Chinese for several years.

From Beginner to Global Stage

Faith only started learning Chinese in March 2025.

That means she had studied the language for less than two years before representing Nigeria at a major international competition.

Some of the contestants she faced had been studying Chinese for five, six or even more than 10 years. Others had already lived in China and had significantly more exposure to the language and culture.

Despite that experience gap, Faith performed strongly enough to reach the Global Top 30 before eventually securing the Global Third Prize.

Her progress surprised many because she entered the competition with far less experience than several of her competitors.

Hard Work Behind the Achievement

Faith’s success was not based on language ability alone.

The competition also tested participants on communication, cultural knowledge, confidence and stage performance.

According to officials at the UNIZIK Confucius Institute, her dedication, consistency and willingness to learn played an important role in her performance.

Her journey has also been described as an example of what young Nigerians can achieve when they combine discipline with opportunity.

Qin Fangfang of the Confucius Institute praised Faith’s determination and courage, noting that her performance reflected the persistence often shown by Nigerian students pursuing ambitious goals.

Another Milestone for UNIZIK

Faith’s achievement also adds to the growing record of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Confucius Institute in the Chinese Bridge competition.

She became the 12th student from the institute to reach the Global Top 30 since 2018.

Over the years, students from the institution have recorded several notable achievements, including African championships, Global First Prizes and Global Third Prizes.

The latest result further strengthens the university’s reputation in Chinese language education and international cultural competitions.

What the Chinese Bridge Competition Is About

The “Chinese Bridge” competition brings together students from different countries who are studying Chinese as a foreign language.

Participants are assessed on how well they can communicate in Mandarin, as well as their understanding of Chinese culture, traditions and society.

The competition also serves as a platform for cultural exchange, giving young people from different countries the opportunity to interact and learn from one another.

For Faith, the event became more than a language contest. It was an opportunity to represent Nigeria on a global stage.

Recognition Beyond the University

Faith’s performance attracted congratulations from the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, which also recognised Nnamdi Azikiwe University and its Confucius Institute.

Her success was described as another positive example of growing educational and cultural ties between Nigeria and China.
