Nigerian Army Honours Late Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, with Final Military Salute

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter’s Cemetery in Ibadan fell into solemn silence on Thursday as the Nigerian Army bid farewell to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Iyanda Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, with a full military burial.

The rhythmic thud of soldiers’ boots and the mournful sound of the bugle marked the final moments of a man who was not only a custodian of Yoruba tradition but also a decorated soldier.

Oba Olakulehin, who reigned for less than a year before his passing, retired from the Nigerian Army in 1979 as a Major after a distinguished career in the Corps of Engineers. Commissioned in July 1970, he rose to command key regiments, shaping Army infrastructure and readiness during a crucial era in Nigeria’s history.

Born on July 5, 1935, in Ibadan, his life was defined by discipline, service, and community leadership. From his early education in Ibadan to his technical training at Yaba College of Technology, and later his transition from the military to business and community service, he left an enduring mark on every path he walked.

In July 2024, he ascended the Olubadan throne, bringing the values of a soldier and the wisdom of an elder statesman to the traditional leadership of Ibadanland.

At the funeral, Governor Seyi Makinde described him as “a bridge between the values of discipline and the spirit of communal leadership.” Major General Obinna Onubogu, GOC 2 Division, hailed him as a leader who “embodied loyalty, courage, and selfless service.”

As soldiers fired their final salute and lowered his flag-draped coffin, the legacy of Oba Olakulehin was cemented — a soldier-king who built fortifications in war and bridges in peace.
