Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away at 82

Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most enduring public figures, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Saturday in London at the age of 82.

His death was confirmed in a statement by his long-time spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, who shared the announcement via X (formerly Twitter):

> “The family of the former President has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR… May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Buhari, born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, leaves behind a legacy that spans both military and democratic leadership — having ruled Nigeria as a military head of state (1983–1985) and later returning as a civilian president (2015–2023).

His presidency was anchored on three core pillars: anti-corruption, national security, and infrastructure renewal. While praised for his discipline and integrity, his tenure also drew criticism over economic challenges and dependence on foreign healthcare.

Buhari remains a deeply polarizing yet influential figure, admired in Northern Nigeria for his modesty and commitment to public service.

He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, their children and grandchildren.
